What matters for pest control in Darwin
The National Construction Code carries a Northern Territory specific termite variation. Termite management systems must include additional measures where Mastotermes darwiniensis, the giant northern termite, is prevalent, and a chemical perimeter system there must be trenched, backfilled with treated material, and then covered by a concrete strip at least 50 mm thick and 300 mm wide from the external wall.

The NT Government says homes in the Territory have a high risk of termite damage and recommends a licensed pest controller inspect and report on your home every 12 months, on top of your own checks. Physical systems such as slab edge exposure, metal shielding and stainless steel mesh last the life of the building but need more frequent inspection than chemical systems.

Under the NT variation to the NCC, naturally termite resistant timber only counts as resistant in areas where Mastotermes darwiniensis is not prevalent. In the Top End that leaves preservative treated timber to AS 3660.1 Appendix D as the practical option.

Darwin is in the range of Mastotermes darwiniensis, the giant northern termite that the NCC singles out for extra protection measures in the Northern Territory. A Darwin termite job is a different standard of work from a southern one, and the NT Government recommends a licensed inspection every 12 months.
