In NSW roof plumbing, roof tiling and roof slating are separate licence classes, and a contractor licence is needed once residential work is worth more than $5,000 in labour and materials including GST.

Under the Fair Work pay guide for the Building and Construction General On-site Award, effective 1 July 2026, a Level 3 (CW/ECW 3) roof tiler, slate-ridger or roof fixer on daily hire residential work has a minimum rate of $32.43 an hour including allowances.

Roof plumbers fall under the Plumbing and Fire Sprinklers Award. The Fair Work pay guide effective 1 July 2026 sets $32.80 an hour for a registered plumbing and mechanical services tradesperson level 1, and $65.60 on Sunday.

In NSW, work over $5,000 needs a written contract, work over $20,000 needs a large-job contract with Home Building Compensation cover, and the deposit is capped at 10 per cent of the contract price.

In WA the Home Building Contracts Act covers work between $7,500 and $500,000 and caps the deposit at 6.5 per cent of the contract price. Home indemnity insurance is required for work needing a building permit and worth more than $20,000.

In the ABS Producer Price Index for inputs to house construction, other metal products rose 2.6 per cent in the June 2026 quarter and 4.9 per cent over the year, against 3.8 per cent for all inputs (released 31 July 2026).
